This talk will introduce some of our recent research progress in sparse representation based image analysis and face recognition. Sparse representation has shown strong capability in image reconstruction such as image denoising, deblurring, super-resolution and compressed sensing. Meanwhile, sparse representation has also been attracting lots of attention in pattern classification such as face recognition, and it has shown many interesting results. However, is it really the sparsity that helps face recognition? In this talk, we will demonstrate that it is not the sparse representation, but the collaborative representation, that truly helps face recognition, and we will also show some results on regularized coding based robust face recognition.
Lei Zhang received the B.Sc. degree in 1995 from Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Shenyang, P.R. China, the M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Control Theory and Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, P.R. China, respectively in 1998 and 2001. From 2001 to 2002, he was a research associate in the Dept. of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. From Jan. 2003 to Jan. 2006 he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Canada. In 2006, he joined the Dept. of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as an Assistant Professor. Since Sept. 2010, he has been an Associate Professor in the same department. His research interests include Image and Video Processing, Biometrics, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Optimal Estimation Theory, etc. Dr. Zhang is an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on SMC-C, an Associate Editor of Image and Vision Computing, and the guest editor of several special issues in international journals. Dr. Zhang has published more than 100 papers in top journals and conferences. Dr. Zhang was awarded the Faculty Merit Award in Research and Scholarly Activities 2010, the Best Paper Award of SPIE VCIP2010. The “Digital Image/ Video Quality Enhancement System” he developed was awarded the Silver Medal in the iENA exhibition, Nuremberg, Germany.
